Recent website hacks and how to spot a bad website

October 25, 2026 ยท with A.I. Davios and Mira

Hook: Hackers hijacked more than 5,400 real small business websites this month, so a site that looks familiar is no longer proof that it is safe. Teach: Here is how it worked. Attackers slipped hidden code into ordinary WordPress and online store sites. Visitors saw a fake "verify you are human" box that told them to copy a command and paste it into the Windows Run box. That one paste installed malware that steals saved passwords. On October 14, Microsoft and international police shut down three phishing platforms that sold ready-made fake pages copying more than 75,000 banks, delivery services, and tax agencies. Scammers are also buying search ads that lead to fake Medicare enrollment pages. A.I. Davios here with four checks before you trust any website. Read the full address in the bar, not the logo on the page, and watch for swapped letters or extra words like "secure-login." Type the address of your bank or benefits site yourself instead of clicking ads or text links. If a page asks you to paste a command or install something to "fix" it, close the tab. Be suspicious of brand new shops with countdown timers and prices that seem too good to be true. When in doubt, stop and ask your IT team.
